Guide to Union Budget expenditure data
What is Union Budget total expenditure?
The Union Budget of India is the annual financial statement presented by the Government of India to Parliament. It outlines estimated revenues and expenditures for the upcoming financial year (April–March). Total expenditure refers to the sum of all estimated spending by the Union government—including revenue expenditure (day-to-day spending on salaries, subsidies, interest, etc.) and capital expenditure (investments in infrastructure, defence assets, and other long-term outlays).
This dataset covers the total expenditure estimated under each Union Budget from 1947-48 to 2026-27. The figures are in rupees crore (1 crore = 10 million). Tracking this over time helps understand the scale of government spending, fiscal priorities, and how the budget has grown with the economy.
Units and definitions
All values are reported in rupees crore (₹ crore). One crore equals 10 million (1,00,00,000). For example, a figure of 53,47,315 crore means approximately ₹53.47 lakh crore in total expenditure for that financial year. The financial year runs from 1 April of one calendar year to 31 March of the next (e.g. 2024-25 is April 2024 to March 2025).

Understanding the chart and table
The chart plots total estimated expenditure for each financial year. Trends reflect both growth in the size of the economy and policy choices (e.g. higher capital expenditure in recent years). The table shows the same data in tabular form with numbers formatted for readability. Use the year filters to compare specific decades or periods.
