The scheme aims to recognise excellence in statistical research and official statistics. Through this scheme, national recognition is provided to eligible Indian statisticians for lifetime or young achiever contributions.

Description
The scheme “Sukhatme National Award in Statistics” has been implemented by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, Government of India. It aims to recognise outstanding contributions made by individuals in terms of high-quality research work, to improve the system of official statistics in general, and to develop innovative methods for addressing challenges encountered in sample surveys, data management systems, and data integration, in particular. Through this scheme, national-level recognition in the form of a citation, shawl, and memento is provided to eligible Indian statisticians for lifetime contribution or young achiever excellence. Ceremony Details : - The award will be presented on Statistics Day, i.e. on 29th June every year, with an award in each of the two categories being given in alternate years. - At this ceremony, citations highlighting the work of the awardee would be read out. - Awardee may also be requested to take a session highlighting the significance of their work.

• (Note: Among the two categories of the National Award in Statistics, only one award shall be conferred each year on an alternate basis.)

Eligibility Criteria
1. The applicant must be an Indian National without distinction of race, occupation, position and gender.
2. The applicant should be at least 45 years of age as on 31st December of the financial year in which the award is announced, and is eligible to apply for the said award.
3. The applicant should not be an official involved in the selection process of the awardees.
4. The applicant’s family members should also not be part of the selection process of the awardees.

Applications for the Sukhatme National Award in Statistics are invited only through the National Awards Portal of the Ministry of Home Affairs at https://www.awards.gov.in.

In posthumous cases, if the person proposed to be honoured has passed away within 1 year, the award may be given posthumously.
The selection of awardee(s) will be done in four stages, as follows:
Primary Scrutiny by the Subject Matter Division of MoSPI.
Examination by Screening Committee
External Scrutiny Examination
Final Selection of the Nominee by the Award Committee
