The “National Centre for Earth Science Studies Internship” scheme by the Earth System Science Organization, Ministry of Earth Sciences, provides various opportunities for school as well as college students to familiarise and/or pursue research on different branches of earth sciences. National Centre for Earth Science Studies NCESS is an R&D institution recognized for doctoral programs in science, environmental, and interdisciplinary topics, with opportunities for Ph.D. registration announced by universities. It hosts eminent scientists for scientific exchange programs and allows all campus college students to participate in the Earth Science Forum for research project presentations.

Exclusions
• The candidates, who were selected for training earlier but did not join, need not apply again.
• Students must undergo at least 8 weeks of training continuously in NCESS, otherwise their candidature will not be considered.

Benefits
• Note: No financial aid /stipend will be provided by this Directorate to the interns.

Eligibility Criteria
1. The applicant should be a Student from a recognized University/ Institute belonging to any of the following stream:
2. - 5 years Integrated M.Sc./M.Sc. Tech./M. Tech.: Students from 7th - 9th Semester; Or,
3. - 3 years M.Sc./M.Sc. Tech.: Students from 3rd – 5th Semester; Or,
4. - 2 years MSc. /M.Sc. Tech. / M. Tech.: Students from 2nd – 3rd Semester; Or,
5. - B.Sc Final year students.

A: Shortlisted candidates, approved by the Director of NCESS, will be announced on the website in the first week of May and the first week of December. The list will also mention the allocated supervisor/group and the title of the internship/training/dissertation.

A: No, supervisors and Internship/Training/Dissertation students are not allowed to select each other. A suitable supervisor will be allotted based on the applications and the applicant's research interests.

A: Students must undergo at least 8 weeks of training continuously at NCESS.

A: Only day field trips (no overnight stay) are allowed for visiting students. Prior approval from the Visiting Students Committee and the Director of NCESS is mandatory for any field work.

A: Visiting students are allowed on the NCESS campus on working days only. In exceptional conditions, they may be allowed on weekends and holidays with prior approval from the Supervisor and Group Head.

Q: What are the requirements for completing the internship/training/dissertation?
A: Students must deliver a 15-minute presentation (10-minute presentation + 5-minute discussion) at the end of their training/dissertation period. Post-presentation, students can get their report/dissertation signed by the supervisor and submit it to the visiting students' committee for issuing the certificate. The report/ dissertation must also be submitted to the NCESS library for future reference.

A: Yes, any publication or communication to a journal that results from the project work must have the consent of both the Guide and NCESS.
