ISDS was launched in the year 2020-21 by the J&K Govt. to promote income generation through the establishment of sheep & goat units. This scheme is innovative & self-sustaining as fresh units shall be established in a continuous cyclic manner from the retrieved livestock of previous beneficiaries.

Description
The Integrated Sheep Development Scheme ISDS was launched in the year 2020-21 by the J&K Government to promote income generation through the establishment of sheep & goat units. The scheme is implemented through Sheep Husbandry Department and monitored by the concerned Director. The support shall be available for the following activities - a Establishment of Sheep/goat units under participatory mode comprising 10 ewes/does b Establishment of Sheep/goat units on subsidy mode 20-200 ewes/does c Establishment of shearing units The beneficiary can be an Individual / Group of Individuals / Self Help Groups / Cooperative Societies / FPOs, etc. Efforts will be made to cover 20% SC/ST and 10% women beneficiaries. The guidelines will be in force till 31st March 2023 or replaced by a new set of guidelines whichever is earlier. This scheme is innovative & self-sustaining as fresh units shall be established in a continuous cyclic manner from the retrieved livestock of previous beneficiaries. The beneficiary must have basic infrastructure & grazing avenues available, to maintain the unit. Around 1200 sheep/goat units are to be established with the creation of employment opportunities for around 2400 people. 200 elite crossbred imported merino sheep to be introduced for genetic upgradation of local sheep for the production of more than 8000 elite lambs which will lead to an increase in carcass yield from prevalent 18 kg to 21 kg besides incrementing fine wool production from the existing 2 Kg to 2.5 Kg per sheep.

Benefits
• Participatory Mode: Selected beneficiaries shall be provided 10 ewes free of cost and from 3rd year onwards 2 ewes/does shall be retrieved for the next 5 years.
• Subsidy Mode: Selected beneficiaries shall be entitled to a 50% subsidy for the establishment of sheep/goat units of 20-200 ewes/does.
• Shearing Units: Selected beneficiaries shall be entitled to a 50 % subsidy for the purchase of a shearing unit consisting of a shearing machine, Genset & shearing spares.
• Component:
• Establishment of Sheep/Goat unit on participatory mode comprising 25 ewes/does.
• Pattern of Assistance:
• > Livestock is supplied free of cost.
• > Retrieval of equivalent livestock from female progeny in a phased manner from 3rd year.
• > Cost of 25 ewes/does @ Rs 8,000 each (including insurance premium for the first year) @ Rs 2,00,000.
• > Display board 3’x2’ & misc expenditure @5,000.
• > Total = Rs 2,05,000
• Component:
• Establishment of Sheep/Goat units (25 Sheep/goat per unit)
• Pattern of Assistance:
• 50% of the unit cost as total eligible subsidy with a ceiling of ₹ 1,00,000 whichever is less per unit (25 sheep/goat) and a maximum subsidy ceiling of ₹ 8,00,000 for 8 Sheep/Goat units (each unit comprising 25 sheep/goats)
• Component:
• Procurement of Shearing units (Comprising of one shearing machine, one genset & shearing accessories/spares)
• Pattern of Assistance:
• 50% of the unit cost as a total eligible subsidy with a ceiling of Rs 75,000/unit whichever is less.

A: 8 sq. ft. per animal, it is the accurate space required per animal, so for 25 EWEs, you may need 200 sq. ft. shed.
In addition to this if you have more land, it is more advantageous as far as feeding or grazing area is concerned.

Q: How Many Times An Animal Is To Be Sheared In A Year?
A: Two times in a year, pre-migration and post-migration from Highland Pastures.

Q: Is It Necessary To Send The Livestock To Highland Pastures During Summer?
A: Yes, it is important to send your livestock to Highland Pastures, the sheep is an animal which is Heat Stress Prone, so it is very difficult for such an animal to remain in plains during high temperature. It gets its favorable temperature only in Highland Pastures. Also there is enough availability of Nutrition's grasses on Highland Pastures. There are also some grasses which are Anti Parasitic and thus help the livestock to remain free from some parasitic diseases. Another most benefit of Highland Pastures is that you don't need to put any expenses on feeding of animals at Highland Pastures.
