IIT Roorkee PhD Admission 2026 (Autumn Semester 2026-27) is now open at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee / IITR). Online applications started on 24 March 2026, and the last date to submit the form is 20 April 2026. Selected candidates will complete in-person academic registration on 13-14 July 2026, with classes commencing from 16 July 2026.

Eligibility Criteria for IIT Roorkee PhD 2026

Candidates must satisfy the Common Minimum Eligibility Criteria (CMEC) and the department-specific Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ).

Common Minimum Eligibility Criteria (CMEC):

  • Master’s degree holders: Minimum CGPA 6.0 (60%) for GEN/GEN-EWS/OBC and 5.5 (55%) for SC/ST/PwD.

  • Must have qualified a national level test (GATE, CEED, JEST, UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, or equivalent) or hold a national fellowship (in most cases).

  • Exemptions:

  • B.Tech/M.Sc with CGPA ≥8.0 from MoE-funded institutions (CFTIs).

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s from IITs with CGPA ≥8.0.

  • 4-year Bachelor’s with CGPA ≥7.5 + national test (non-CFTI).

  • MBBS/BAMS/BHMS/BDS with CGPA 6.0.

  • MS/MD degrees (exempt from CGPA and test).

Selection Process for IIT Roorkee PhD Admission

Admission is purely merit-based. Shortlisted candidates will be called for a written test and/or interview conducted by the respective Department/Centre/School.
